BEAR Implant

What is the BEAR® Implant?

The BEAR Implant is an advanced medical device that helps your body heal after an ACL injury. Traditionally, ACL injuries required treatment with an invasive procedure. Specifically, your surgeon would have to take a tendon from another part of your body or a deceased donor.

The BEAR Implant is unique in that it works alongside your body’s natural healing process. What’s more, Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton is one of the few multi-specialty practices in Ohio that offers this state-of-the-art treatment.

Who can benefit from the BEAR Implant?

You might benefit from treatment with the BEAR Implant if you experience a knee injury and develop any of the following symptoms:

After an in-office exam, discussion of your symptoms, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), your Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton provider can determine if you qualify.

How does treatment with the BEAR Implant work?

A thick liquid called synovial fluid surrounds your knee joints. Synovial fluid helps reduce friction when you move your knee, but it also prevents blood clots from forming in the event of an injury.

Typically that isn’t a problem, but if you tear your ACL, blood clots are vital for healing.

The BEAR Implant acts as a bridge, holding the ends of your torn ACL together. That allows a blood clot to form, enhancing your body’s natural healing process.

The team at Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton inserts the BEAR Implant during a quick outpatient procedure. First, your surgeon numbs your knee with a local anesthetic, makes a small incision, and inserts the implant. Then, they close the incision and provide care instructions.

What is recovery like after getting a BEAR Implant?

After the BEAR Implant procedure, it’s normal to experience redness, bruising, and swelling. Take your medications as prescribed, get lots of rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Once your knee begins healing, it’s important to participate in the BEAR Implant physical therapy program.

Physical therapy teaches you stretches and strengthening exercises to speed up your recovery and reduce the risk of complications.
