Molly A. Tatum, DO, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery

A lifelong athlete, Dr. Tatum is all too familiar with sports injuries. Her own experience with knee surgeries and an orthopaedic surgeon who was instrumental in getting her back on the field gives Dr. Tatum the unique perspective of having been both patient and care provider. "What I love about being a surgeon is helping athletes of all ages and levels get back to the activities they enjoy," she says.

After earning her bachelor's degree in health education and athletic training from the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Tatum went on to pursue her master's in sports medicine at the University of Miami, followed by her doctorate in osteopathic medicine from Ohio University. She completed her residency in orthopaedic surgery at Grandview Medical Center in Dayton, followed by a fellowship in sports medicine orthopaedic surgery at MedStar Union Hospital in Baltimore.

In fact, Dr. Tatum's residency in Dayton was what led her to become part of the Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton staff. "From my time in Dayton, and being a Cincinnati native, I knew the reputation of the practice, so I was excited to learn they were looking for another sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon to join the team."

Dr. Tatum previously served as a team physician for universities and professional sports teams, including the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Wizards, Morgan State University, Loyola University (MD), Towson University, U.S. Women’s Lacrosse, and Baltimore Blast (MASL). She is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopic Association of North America, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. She is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), has been certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification, and is board-eligible with the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

When she's not working with athletes, Dr. Tatum enjoys, traveling, spending time with her family and dog, and supporting her alma maters on game day. A native of Cincinnati, she is excited to work with the Dayton community and call it home.
