How can you begin to write a review for a physician who not only saved your limb, but literally saved your life? My right knee replacement became severely infected and had to be removed and replaced with an antibiotic spacer after which I underwent two rounds of IV antibiotic therapy. My wife and I were advised my options were fusion of the knee joint or an above-the-knee amputation requiring a prosthetic device. At that point, we obtained a second opinion from Dr. Romer. We explained what was important to us – traveling and participating in our grandchildren’s activities – and how limiting either of those options would be. Dr. Romer listened to us and while he didn’t make any promises, he agreed to explore other options. In the end, Dr. Romer agreed to reconstruct my knee with Marlex mesh and reimplant the knee replacement. After this successful knee replacement and reconstruction, I developed a pseudoaneurysm which was life-threatening. Dr. Romer worked with a vascular surgeon at MVH to repair the femoral arteries and remove the hematoma which literally saved my life. During this entire process, Dr. Romer listened to us, answered our questions in an easy-to-understand manner, contacted us personally before and after surgery and continued to monitor my condition. In addition to his exceptional skill as a surgeon, I can’t begin to explain how caring, committed, and empathetic Dr. Romer is. Dr. Romer didn’t shy away from the hard discussions, but above all, he listened to us and what we wanted our life to look like in our retirement years and used his exceptional skill to make that vision a reality.
